Cardiac Catheterization Instructions

Catheterization is a procedure performed to evaluate for blockage in your heart arteries that could be responsible for your symptoms or abnormal stress tests. You will likely be admitted to the hospital on the day of the procedure. Please have someone to drive you to the hospital and remain there with you until procedure is over. You will not be able to drive home after the procedure.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

  1. Have NOTHING to eat or drink after midnight the night prior to the procedure if your procedure is scheduled for the morning.
  2. DO NOT STOP Plavix or Aspirin unless specifically directed by our physician.
  3. STOP COUMADIN /WARFARIN 5 DAYS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE. If you are in any other blood thinner . Ask your physician for instructions.
  4. IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IODINE OR HAVE HAD AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO X-RAY DYE YOU WILL NEED TO BE PRE-MEDICATED. PLEASE NOTIFY US IN ADVANCE SO YOU CAN BEGIN MEDICATION THE DAY BEFORE.
  5. If you are diabetic you will want to only take HALF of the normal INSULIN the morning of the procedure and DO NOT take any of your diabetic pills you are on.
  6. GLUCOPHAGE (METFROMIN) OR GLUCOVANCE must be stopped the day prior to the procedure and for 2 days after.
  7. You may take all other medications that are not required to be taken with food, with small sips of water (if you take diuretics also known as water pills you may want to delay taking them until later in the evening for you comfort as you will be on bed rest).
  8. You will be required to have blood work done prior to the procedure to evaluate your kidney function and Blood levels. You may be asked to take a medication called Mucomyst. This liquid medication may be taken with juice or soda and assists your kidneys in removing X-ray dye.

Nuclear Stress Test Instructions

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

  1. No caffeine (including coffee, Tea, Chocolate, Soda, Or decaffeinated beverages 24 hours prior to test)
  2. No smoking at least 4 hours prior to test
  3. Nothing to eat 4 hours prior to test
  4. Please drink plenty of water and only water the day of the test.
  5. Please make sure that you are hydrated for this test dehydration will make it difficult to start an IV.
  6. You may take you medicine as you normally do, unless otherwise instructed.
  7. DO NOT TAKE YOUR BETA BLOCKERS (IE Atenolol, Metoprolol, Bisoprolol ,Carvedilol, Labetalol unless
    otherwise instructed)
  8. For treadmill testing please wear walking shoes and no metal shirts.
  9. Please refrain from wearing necklaces for test.

We will confirm your appointment prior to the scheduled date.
You will be charged $125.00 for missed nuclear appointment or for not following the above instructions resulting in cancelation.

Pacer AICD Instructions

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

  1. Please arrive at the hospital fasting (nothing to eat) from the previous midnight if your procedure was schedule for the morning. If your procedure is after 2pm you can have a light breakfast no later than 8
    am.
  2. You may take your morning medications with a small sip of water.
  3. If you have been instructed to have blood drawn, please do not forget (you may be instructed to have
    this done several days before your procedure)
  4. STOP Plavix AND Aspirin 5 DAYS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE unless OTHERWISE specifically directed by our
    physician.
  5. STOP COUMADIN /WARFARIN 5 DAYS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE. If you are in any other blood thinner –
    Inform physician for instructions.

  9. If you have not received a phone call from the hospital or our office by the day before the procedure to
    let you know what time to arrive, please call us.
  10. Please arrange to have someone drive you to the hospital and home after the procedure as driving is
    typically limited for at least 2 weekS after device implantation
  11. If you develop a cold or are sick, please consult your physician immediately as we may need to postpone
    your procedure. 

Walking Treadmill Stress Test

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

  1. Wear comfortable clothing something that you can walk in please refrain from wearing Flipflops and Heels.
  2. You will have to remove your shirt for testing. Females may wear a button-down shirt for comfort if needed.
  3. You can eat food that day.
  4. If you take a Beta blocker DO NOT take this the day of your stress test. If you do, your test will be cancelled and you will be charged a fee per our office policy.
